Electric Guitar Curriculum
A curriculum for the electric guitar
Teaching electric instrument to a beginner is "exactly the same but different" to teaching an acoustic guitar
Exactly the same in that from a standing start the learner needs to learn how to change between eight basic guitar chords in time to music but different in the way that they may be introduced to some elements of guitar playing (such as single note passages presented as solos) once the basics of changing chords has been mastered

Guitar Lesson Plan 6
A lot of people learn electric guitar "wrong"
They want to learn how to play the guitar but spend a whole load of time and enthusiasm looking at youtube videos and using tab sites to work on things that are way too advanced for them and then when they find out that they cannot play the music that they chose or at best can play it badly then the enthusiasm wanes and the guitar goes back in the case or just sits on a stand in the corner of the room reminding them that "they suck" (to use the modern parlance)
"They didn't get good enough fast enough"
What happened?
They were commited enough to buy (or ask for) a guitar and the various amplifiers and pedals etc that they thought that they needed in order to make the progress that they expected but the reality was that they didn't get good enough fast enough
Their enthusiasm drained away and they became convinced that they would never amount to much on the guitar because they chose to try to learn the wrong things in a disjointed and more or less random fashion with the music that they chose being technically more demanding than they could cope with
Back in the mists of time I interviewed rock god and all around bass virtuoso Billy Sheehan for a guitar magazine that I used to write for and he told me that everybody at the bass clinics that he was doing at the time wanted to talk to him about two handed tapping and scalloped frets and how some folks were visibly disappointed when they asked for advice as to how to get to his level when he said that they should get a good basic technique and spend a few years playing cover versions for five hours a night in a bar band
Folks (not unreasonably when you think about it) would rather go straight to the rock god virtuoso stage than spend the years of dedication and application that it always takes to get there
Where we come in....
Our job as guitar teachers is to help those folk to learn guitar "properly" without diminishing their enthusiasm for the instrument
Below is a simple set of simple guidelines that can help a teacher to negotiate the beginner and intermediate stages of a student's early career
The guidelines should be used alongside material "customised" to take into account the learner's own particular tastes and aspirations as a player We have a comprehensive range of blank guitar necks, chord and tab sheets etc that will allow any guitar teacher to produce professional looking handouts featuring a student's favourite (playable) riffs, solos and single note passages at the drop of a hat
Electric Guitar Curriculum
Stage 1: Learn to move between eight chords in time to music
Stage 2: Incorporate bar chords and basic music theory
Stage 3: Introduce solo lines using the pentatonic minor scale
The reason that we get results (and get paid!) as guitar teachers is that we know what the student should learn now and next and the best teachers do this while paying close attention to the tastes of their students
Having said that we should be prepared to forcefully point out that lead guitar is not "better" than rhythm guitar and that only practicing lead guitar playing produces "music shop monsters" who cannot play chords well enough to hold down a job in a decent band
We are not here to educate them about what good music is but to help them towards a situation where they can play music that they like and it is worth pointing out that you don't have to be a great (or even good) technical player to write a great song
Part of the download is a set of materials that look at the theory surrounding songwriting on guitar and this material can be a great way to turn students on to using music theory as a tool on the guitar
