electric and acoustic guitar teaching curriculum

Acoustic Guitar Curriculum

A curriculum for beginners on the acoustic guitar

Acoustic and electric guitars are "similar but different" and it does not seem unreasonabe to maintain that a teacher's approach to lessons should recognise and accomodate those differences

Rather than concentrate on the obvious differences between electric and acoustic guitars it may be better to look at the aspirant musicians (our customers!) who elect to study one or the other

Those who want to learn acoustic guitar fall into two main categories The first is children who may be coming to your lessons because you teach guitar in schools or whose parents have decided to fund an out of school musical education

Although the material covered in the early stages of guitar playing is the same for both child and adult players the approach to how to teach children to play guitar needs to be radically different to that adopted with older students

Guitar Lesson Plan 6

Lesson Plan 6 is the jumping off point that allows a learner to make the move from being a total novice who has been working towards forming a few basic chords to somebody equipped with a plan that will help turn them into a properly functional guitarist

This simple system can be enough to set you up for a lifetime of teaching beginner and intermediate level guitar players

Teaching Children to play acoustic guitar

Teaching children has to be more about having fun now this minute rather than the promise of some reward (such as eventually becoming a better guitar player) that will come to those who practice regularly and effectively

Is it better to learn on an acoustic or an electric guitar?

As a teacher I am also quite keen on the idea that anyone who wants to become a guitarist should start on (or at least own and use regularly) an acoustic guitar irrespective of the genres of music that they may (at the moment) display an effection for or a devotion to

There are many factors underpinning my assertion but perhaps the simplest and easiest to understand is that the acoustic guitar leaves a player with nowhere to hide whereas on an electric instrument it is possible that amplification and effects pedals can conspire to make a player believe that they are much better than they actually are This never ends well!

An acoustic instrument will also respond much more authentically to dynamics (how hard or soft it is struck) and playing one will in turn make the player more sensitive and responsive to the basic physical act of sounding a guitar Of course I am not and would never try to make the case that players of electric instruments are not capable of the same and even greater dynamic range but in the early stages of learning to play given the choice I would prefer a student to paractice on an acoustic guitar

One great big exception to that "rule" is that if the only thing that exites a novice player is effects pedals set to stun and channel gains on maximum balls to the wall metal madness then there is no point in killing their enthusiasm by insisting that they play an acoustic guitar to satisfy an old guitar teacher

The most powerful weapon in the arsenal of a professional guitar teacher is not the talent and capability of the teacher themselves Nor is it even (as much as I wish it was because I sell them!) the quality and quantity of the resources used in the teaching process The most important asset that a guitar teacher has and should at all times cultivate is the enthusiasm of those that choose to take lessons with us

The Curriculum

Adhering to the KISS principle (keep It Simple Stupid!- dont hunt me down, its not my theory but I like it) here's how it works for thousands of effective guitar teachers all over the world...

Stage 1: Teach the eight chords that all beginners should learn first

Stage 2: Help them to move between them in time to music

Stage 3: Review progress and introduce bar chords and music theory

Teaching guitar really is that simple!

I know that the devil is in the detail and all of that and we have loads of material that covers topics such as how to write songs with a guitar or teaching more advanced guitar teachers the fact remains that for a teacher there is only one question that needs to be effectively answered at the beginning of a guitar lesson....

..."how can I best use the coming hour to make my student a better guitar player?"

This site offers a whole load of resources (over 450 PDF's and 35 guitar teacher's backing tracks)that are guaranteed to help you to answer that question
