Tuning A Child's Guitar is important

When teaching kids to play guitar it is fair to say that they can not really make any significant progress unless the guitar they learn on is in tune. In the early stages the responsibility for ensuring that the guitar is in tune falls to the adult overseeing or supervising the child's lessons.

Technology To The Rescue!

In the past this meant that an experienced guitar player needed to be almost constantly on hand to correct changes to a guitar's tuning caused by transportation, accidental knocks to the machine heads or the changes in room temperature. In my own case in my teenage years (when I first started to play the guitar) I was obliged to rely on the infrequent and intermittent visits of my brother in law ("Thanks Ray!") to put the guitar that he loaned me at the start of my musical career back into some semblance of "proper" tuning. It is rare for someone who has no experience of playing guitar to be able to tune it "by ear" but luckily technology has come to the rescue.

Tuning a child's guitar by ear

Below is a youtube video that gives the pitches that the strings of a guitar should be tuned to and this can be very useful to check that a guitar is in tune before a lesson or practice session.

Guitar Tuners and apps

In addition to the above method of tuning a guitar by ear in recent years the market has been flooded by cheap devices that allow even relatively inexperienced musicians to ensure that their guitars are properly in tune. Guitar tuners are great and every serious guitar student should have one. There are also a whole load of apps that you can download to a phone that will help you to get a child's guitar in tune If you arrived on this page from a search engine it might be a good idea to take a look at our page that provides an introduction to how to teach Children to play the guitar
