A first guitar lesson for a beginner

Beginners Guitar Lesson 1

Help a student to move between the first two beginner friendly guitar chords in time to music

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson somebody who cannot play guitar at all will be able to move between two of the eight chords that any guitar player needs to learn first strumming those chords in time to music

That is a real result and it means that they are off and running when it comes to learning to play the guitar properly

Without wanting to resort to any of that "a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step" malarkey this is the most effective single step that anyone whe sets out to become a guitar player can make

During the earliest stages of learning to play experienced teachers tend to not concern their students too much with music theory as it relates to guitar

There are six basic steps involved in this first beginners guitar lesson....

1: Demonstrate and explain how to form chords of G and Em

2: Move between the shapes

3: Change chords in time to music strumming each chord once

4: Use more complicated strumming patterns

5: Make sure your student knows what to practice before the next lesson

6: Email the backing track to your student for home study!

The Lesson Plan In Action.....

Step 1: Give your student the handout featuring the chords of G and Em (shown above) and explain how the numbers inside the black circles refer to the (fretting hand) fingers used in the construction of the shape

Step 2: Spend some time encouraging your student to change between the chords in their own time and strumming each chord once

It is also important to encourage your student to commit the chord shapes and fingerings to memory even at this early stage as "the knowledge is no good if it stays on the paper"

Step 3:Have your student strum each chord once as it changes along to the backing track

You can hear a short snippet of the backing track below or if you like you can visit our backing tracks and handouts page where you can hear more examples of our guitar teacher's backing tracks and see the printable handouts that accompany them

Step 4: Encourage the use of more complicated ("down-up-down-up") strumming patterns

Here's a short video I have up there on youtube that looks at this lesson and suggested strumming patterns in greater detail.....

The video will start from "lesson no 1"

Steps 5 and 6: Email the backing track to the student for home study and give them a Practice Plan that they can use to help prepare them for the next lesson

The download includes a printable blank practice plan document that you can complete towards the end of a session that will leave your student in no doubt with relation to what they need to practice before the next lesson

Guitar Lesson Plan 6

Lesson Plan 6 is not so much a lesson plan as the jumping off point for a student to make the move from being an absolute beginner who has been working towards forming and strumming simple chord shapes to someone who has a plan that will help turn them into a well rounded and competent musician

This simple system can be enough to set you up for a lifetime of teaching beginner and intermediate level guitar players
