teaching beginners to play the guitar with best and easiest chords

Beginner's Guitar Lesson 2

Two new beginners guitar chords to add to the two learned in the previous lesson

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson a beginner will be able to form two more chord shapes and will have the ability to move between them at will in time to music

The student will also be expected to be able to name, form and strum the chords without having to refer to chord diagrams

There are five basic stages involved in this second guitar lesson....

1: Recap the material covered in lesson 1 and address any issues arising

2: Learn to form and strum (once) the chords of D and C

3: Change new chords in time to music strumming each chord once

4: Use more complicated strumming patterns

5: Combine all four chords learned to this point in a single sequence along to a backing track

6: Make sure your student knows what to practice before the next lesson

7: Email the backing track to your student for home practice!

The lesson....

Recap of lesson 1

Before the new material that makes up this lesson is presented it is important to revisit the material (the chords of G and Em) presented in the first lesson

A teacher should ensure that the student is able to be able to play the chords of G and Em to the accompaniment of the backing track employed during the first session

Step 1: Give your student the handout to go along with the backing track featuring the chords of D and C (shown above)

Step 2: Spend some time encouraging your student to change between the chords in their own time and strumming each chord once

It is also important to encourage your student to commit the chord shapes and fingerings to memory even at this early stage as "the knowledge is no good if it stays on the paper"

Step 3:Have your student strum each chord once as it changes along to the backing track featuring the chords of D and C

Hear a snippet of the backing track

You can hear a short snippet of the backing track below or if you like you can visit our backing tracks and handouts page where you can hear more examples of our guitar teacher's backing tracks and see the printable handouts that accompany them

Step 4: Encourage the use of more complicated ("down-up-down-up") strumming patterns

Backing Track combining all four chords encountered to this point

Here's a short video I have up there on youtube that looks at this lesson and suggested strumming patterns in greater detail.....

The video will start from "lesson no 2"

Step 5: Fill out and give your student a Practice Plan (you can see an example practice plan below) to remind them of the things that they should work on and to prepare them for the next lesson

The download includes a printable blank practice plan document that you can complete towards the end of a session that will leave your student in no doubt with relation to what they need to practice before the next lesson
